Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major health problem which contributing for cardiovascular disease and other complications. Nowadays, the incidence of hypertension in young population is increasing. Many factors contribute the occurrence of hypertension in young adults. Objective: This study is to determine factors contributing hypertension in young adult patient in Moh Ridwan Meuraksa Army Hospital. Method: This study was carried out a cross sectional study that utilized medical record from Moh Ridwan Meuraksa Army Hospital within January to December 2019. Patients aged ≤45 years with Systolic Blood Pressure ≥140 mmHg and Diastolic Blood Pressure ≥90 mmHg were included. Risk factors data such as gender; BMI; smoking status; family history of hypertension; and physical activity statuses were collected. The exclusion criteria were patients with any other cardiac, kidney and vascular disease. Result: 91 hypertensive young patients were selected during January to December 2019, 51 patients (56.04%) are male and 40 patients (43.96%) are female. 62 patients (68.13%) with grade 1 hypertension, 28 patients (30.77%) with grade 2 hypertension and 1 patient (1.10%) with grade 3 hypertension. Based on BMI, 41 patients (45.06%) are overweight and 26 patients (28.57%) are obese. According risk factors data, absent of physical activity is the highest prevalence (69.23%) then followed by smoking (61.54%) and family history of hypertension (58.24%). Conclusion: This study revealed that the highest risk factor that contributing hypertension in young adult patients is absent of physical activity. Further study is needed to prevent cardiovascular mortality in younger population.
