Abstract

Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao and his colleagues of the reform group fled to Macau and established a Chinese newspaper, The Reformer China (Zhi Xin Bao) (1897.2-1901.2). With the purpose of taking charge of political criticism by scholars, and exploiting people’s mind, The Reformer China formed a connecting link between the antecedent newspaper The Current (Shiwu Bao) and the succedent The China Discussion (Qing Yi Bao). In virtue of distinctive political ideas and positive ideological enlightenment, The Reformer China boasted significant historical value. The Reformer China contains a lot of arguments about the Korean Peninsula, and a considerable part of them are about the competition between Japan and Russia on the Korean Peninsula. By combing the coering of aggressive competition in Korea by Japan and Russia, a more comprehensive understanding the situation of Korean Peninsula at the turn of 19th to 20th century can be formed. Through the surface phenomenon of talking about Korea, both arguers and editors of The Reformer China conveyed the essence of the great political and national crises in modern China, and was alert to its future trend. This thesis illustrates the expatiation of Korea in The Reformer China, by analyzing its form and contents, especially referring to the covering of how Japan and Russia contended in Korea, thereby to judge its historical value and practical significant. It contains an introduction, three chapters in main body and the conclusion. The introduction presents the motivation of choosing this topic, analysis of the theoretical value and practical significant of carrying out this study, and summary of the domestic and foreign research status. Chapter 2 pays attention to the exposition of Russia’s yearning to possess Korea in 1897, concerning about the process of Russia’s embezzling Korea and the various privileges it seized. Chapter 3 analyses the reports of Japan and Russia invading Korea in 1898, and pays attention to the competition between Japan and Russia. Chapter 4 analyses the reports of Japan and Russia invading Korea in 1899-1900. In the conclusion, the historical value of the covering of how Japan and Russia contended in Korea in The Reformer China is judged.
