Abstract

By using clips from the movie Minari, we will introduce and discuss overall family structure, family dynamics, and mode of communication in east Asian families, especially Korean families. We will especially focus on the methods of conflict resolution, the different roles of family members as a function of generation/gender, and recognizing intergenerational trauma as a latent source of mental health issues in many east Asian families. Immigration itself will be significantly considered as one of the sources of traumatic experience, which is often overlooked by nonimmigrant clinicians.
