Abstract

This study focused on changes in the daily life and coping behaviors of university students since the onset of COVID-19. The following three key research questions were asked, how has daily life changed since the onset of COVID-19 compared to daily life before the onset of COVID-19? What were the emotional changes and how one has dealt with the changes? and what were the major changes one could identify in oneself? In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 university students in Seoul and Daegu. They were selected based on the requirement that they were attending college before the onset of COVID-19 and continued throughout the onset of COVID-19.BR The findings were as follows. First, the subjects were faced with transitioning to online classes, failure of effective career plans, and reduction in social relationships. Second, the process of coping behaviors has changed over time. In the early pandemic period, most of the subjects became passive in their work but were actively involved in preparing for new plans afterwards. They also had a chance to rearrange the scope of relationships with friends. The last coping behavior included the modification of their plans to suit the situation. Throughout the process of coping behaviors, they set their career goals, they developed the ability to make decisions on their own, and they were satisfied with the feeling of growing up and reorganizing their social relationships.BR This study concluded that the daily life of university students has changed since the onset of COVID-19 in many aspects. By accelerating their coping behaviors, they have reduced their time and efforts investing in external relationships but have instead invested time and efforts on themselves. These results implied that they have been successfully performing the resource management behaviors.
