Abstract

As an icon of the Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s literary value is often understated. However, Rousseau not only contributed greatly to the 18th century Enlightenment, but influ-enced the Romanticism in France as well. This study will use the ocean featured in his works as an example, and analyse its effects on Romanticism. In addition, this study will present how the marine element in Rousseau’s works inspired well-known writers, such as Victor Hugo, and Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand, and how they thereafter inherited and developed French literature related to marine element.
