Abstract

Yi Sinwon Sasaeng-cheop is typical for the paintings of Joseon Envoys to Qing in the 19th century. The album was painted by professional painter Yi Uiyang in the spring of 1812. But the historical background of paintings was the regular diplomatic mission to Qing in 1809. That is based on the appearance of Thai Envoy and swing performance of the countries bordering on western China on the album. When the Joseon Envoys sent to Beijing, Qing Dynasty oppressed the catholic Christians and stationed the government army in Gwangdong to confront Western powers in the early of 19th century. Yi Sinwon Sasaeng-cheop differs from the albums of 18th century, including paintings of Fenghuang Mountain, the White stupa in Liaoning province, the sunrise at Tashan region, Weiyuan watchtower, numen shrine of the north position, Banshan Mountain, Wuning County, the Land of Happiness, and Yonghe Temple. For instance, A Thai Envoy, a delegate of Moslem land and swing performance are full out a genre subject on the album. Also it has variety of styles of paintings such as real landscape paintings, pictorial maps and architectural drawing. It was painted by a Chinese painting style of the Southern School. Yi Sinwon Sasaeng-cheop is an important material to research the painting style of Yi Uiyang, because his works very rare. It provides information on the itinerary and experience of Joseon Envoys to Qing in the early of 19th century.
