Abstract

The aim of the current study is to investigate the relationships among perceived social supports(family, friends and online), loneliness, and SN S addiction among adolescents amid Covid-19 pandemic and provide the data and insights to therapeutic intervention for adolescents’ psychological well-being. For analysis, an online survey was conducted on middle and high school students in Incheon and Gyeonggi area from Novermber 20, 2020 to December 27, 2020. The survey included questions regarding demographics, social supports(family, friends and online), loneliness and SNS addiction. A total of 282 middle and high school students(35.8% boys; 64.2% girls) responded, and the collected data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 and the structural equation modeling(SEM) was applied to test the appropriateness of the model and the relationships among the variables. The results revealed that: first, friends’ social support was the biggest factor, negatively related to loneliness; second, family’ social support was also negatively linked to loneliness; third, loneliness was fully mediating the paths between friends’ and family’ social supports and SNS addiction. The findings of this study suggest that disastrous situations such as Covid-19 pandemic may deprive adolescents of interpersonal relationships and supports, which is an important underlying cause for SNS addiction. This finding also suggests that the intervention approach to adolescent’s SNS addiction may need to examine the causes for loneliness in one’s social surroundings and to do this, it is necessary to have a counseling strategy to improve friends’ and family’ social supports.
