Abstract

Objectives This study is intended to investigate health behavior and mental health according to depression change due to COVID-19 in adolescents and provide basic data for improving their positive health behavior and mental health.
 Methods This is a secondary analysis study that received raw data from the 17th Annual Youth Health Behavior Survey of 2021. It was analyzed through complex samples frequency analysis, complex samples cross-tabulation, and complex samples logistic regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 20 program.
 Results First, depression change due to COVID-19 increased in girl students, high school students, high school record, low economic level, and high-educated parents. Second, adolescents with decreased depression increased in physical activity(1.13 times) and drinking(1.13 times) but decreased in smoking(0.89 times). Third, adolescents with depression change increased in smartphone use hours and damages by smartphone use. Adolescents with increased depression increased in weekday sleep time(1.64 times) and weekend sleep time(1.28 times). In particular, adolescents with increased depression increased in sadness and hopelessness(4.23 times), suicidal thoughts(5.37 times), suicide plans(4.16 times), and suicide attempts(4.98 times).
 Conclusions It is necessary to develop and apply a digital platform education program to improve the health behavior and mental health of students with depression change due to COVID-19.
