Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify an effect of COVID-19 on undergraduate students mental health and accumulate the basic data of psychological variables with which they can adequately adapt to campus and social life, by examining the depression and anxiety patterns perceived by them before and during COVID-19 and an effect of positive psychological capital on the depression and anxiety perceived by them during COVID-19. The subject of this study were 312 four-year college students located in Chungcheongbuk-do, and SPSS 23 was used for the collected data, descriptive statistics of each variable included in the study and correlations between variables were confirmed. A t-test was performed to determine whether the difference between depression and anxiety felt in COVID-19 was significant. Finally, multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of positive psychological capital on depression and anxiety felt in the COVID-19. The findings are as follows: First, there is a positive correlation between undergraduate students depression and anxiety, while both depression and anxiety have negative correlations with positive psychological capital. Second, there has been a significant difference in their depression and anxiety between before and during COVID-19. Depression level increased significantly compared to the pre-COVID-19, and the anxiety level decreased significantly compared to the pre-COVID-19. Third, it was found that the higher the self-efficacy, optimism and resilience, among the sub-factors of their positive psychological capital, the lower the depression during COVID-19, and that the higher the resilience, the lower the anxiety. Based on these research results, the causes of depression and anxiety in college students in the COVID-19 situation were examined based on previous studies. In addition, through ways to improve positive psychological capital that affects depression and anxiety of college students, ways to adapt well to healthy school life and society and ways to improve mental health were discussed.
