Abstract
Subjective life satisfaction varies greatly by age and generation due to differences in experiences and values. However, the constraints of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea have significantly affected life satisfaction across generations. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether this constraint is differentiated by generation. Since numerous studies on life satisfaction have found similar influencing factors, this study analyzes the impact of social distancing due to COVID-19 on subjective life satisfaction by generation to differentiate from existing studies.
The analysis method is to analyze the influence of major variables constrained by social distancing in Korea using hierarchical regression analysis and compare the influence of each generation. According to the results of the analysis, first, subjective life satisfaction is most strongly affected by goal achievement satisfaction, but it is empirically proven that the generation most affected by COVID-19 is young adults. Second, the influence of the social constraint variables goal achievement satisfaction, domestic travel experience, and life satisfaction varied by generation. In addition, goal achievement satisfaction decreased in all generations, life satisfaction increased in young adults and older adults, and the influence of domestic travel experience and life satisfaction on life satisfaction increased in middle-aged people who were less vulnerable to COVID-19. Finally, the impact of social distancing policies significantly affected subjective life satisfaction across all generations, but goal achievement satisfaction became relatively less influential.
