Abstract

The impact of the 1898 crisis and all the frame of its antecedents in the historical development between Spain and the overseas countries represent the most significant incision in the guidelines for the XIXth century contemporary nation, so much so that it put many of its foundations into question. Because of this, we have observed, in the historiographic field, the need to deepen and put into context many of the approaches born in the last years, as a result of the recent Centenary. Thus, we consider vital to observe the 98 question from wider time perspectives, which do not limit the antecedents or the results of a study which is more ambitious than a mere analysis of the situation itself. Owing to that fact, there arise many questions with a wider study need, such as the rule of the colonial elites in the metropolital development, the relationship between social and political matters as regards military recruitment and its consequences on the people; that is to say, the revision of the impact of the later colonial period, ended in failure, regarding the relationship between the Army and civil society in the first part of the XXth century. It is, thus, necessary to reflect on these subjects, with further research on several aspects not yet anylised or with a insufficient interpretation.
