Abstract

We review Vito Volterra's seminal papers (on the inversion of definite integrals) of 1896, with regard to their mathematical results and within the context of Volterra's life and times. The second part of the paper looks briefly at extensions, by Volterra and some of his contemporaries, of those results and then deals with some of the recent developments in the theory and numerical analysis of Volterra integral equations of the first kind.
