Abstract
Throughout September, preparations were being made for opening the Savoy Theatre and for winding up at the Opera Comique. Richard Barker, disappointed that Richard D'Oyly Carte would not go in with him in developing another opera company, still wanted Carte to stay on at the Opera Comique until October. The first piece Barker had lined up was William Gilbert and Fred Clay's Princess Toto. However, Clay had bought the performing rights and Gilbert was obliged to concede that Clay was only acting within his rights. They came to an amicable agreement, however, over Richard Temple, who was asked to stay behind at the Opera Comique and play in Princess Toto, instead of joining the cast of Patience at the Savoy. A few days before the new theater was due to open, Arthur Sullivan made a belated inspection of the orchestra pit, was not satisfied with it, and asked Carte to have it raised by eight inches.
