Abstract

The emergency physician workforce is largely comprised of white males. Despite recruitment efforts over the last decade, there has not been a significant increase of trainees underrepresented in emergency medicine (URiEM). Prior studies have focused on institutional strategies to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), yet studies have been limited in describing the perspective of URiEM trainees. We sought to assess URiEM perspectives on DEI in the residency application process, the recent surge in academic EM residencies’ efforts related to DEI, and suggestions on future directions.
