Abstract

Introduction: We have previously demonstrated that post-pneumonectomy compensatory lung growth (PPCLG) is an endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) dependent process. MMP-9 -/- mice have an impaired EPC mobilization and a defect in PPCLG. Restoring EPC mobilization in these mice using stem cell factor (SCF), or exogenously isolated CD133+/Flk-1+ cells consistent with an EPC containing subpopulation, correct the defect in PPCLG. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in lung growth, vasculogenesis, and endothelial progenitor cell function.
