Abstract

In the Ottoman Empire, records named tahrir were kept, in order to identify the economic and human resources of the state since early periods. Archives and libraries in Turkey has encountered a large number of census registers. One of the register species is population books that coded Entire male population residing in settlements given in the population books were recorded information of the name, occupation, father's name, father's occupation, gender, age, disability, military status, and migration movements. Population book of Burdur Kaza that coded NFS.d. 3248 is the main source of the study. The article is a historical geography study prepared by analysing the demographic data belonging to the city of Burdur from the population book of Burdur Kaza dated 1834 with the principles of population geography. The purpose of the article is to shed light on the population of Burdur city in 1834 by processing historical information and documents using modern methods. Districts in the Burdur Kaza under the Hamid Sanjak, under the Konya State, were the city of Burdur. In this period, the city consists of 19 districts, 17 of which belong to Muslims and 2 to non-Muslims. The total population of the city was 5,765 people. In the article, the distribution of the male population in the city by district, religious-ethnic structure, distribution by age groups, births and deaths in the city and the educational status of the population were examined. In addition, migrations taking place in and out of the city were also evaluated.
