Abstract

Although transmission control protocol (TCP) and user datagram protocol (UDP) have long filled all transport layer needs for the internet, Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) provides a more adaptable and potentially better performing protocol for the transport layer. This chapter presents the details of SCTP including its architecture, elements, functions and how to use SCTP. The chapter explains how SCTP could improve web performances in several ways — packet valication, streams and chunk bundling, and redundant internet access and path management. Another aspect touched in this chapter is an introduction to Datagram Control Protocol (DCP). DCP is a wok-in-progress protocol that intends to cover applications that have yet not been met by SCTP, UDP and TCP. It is too early to tell whether DCP will achieve any degree of success, yet, DCP is important because it demonstrates the need for a wider variety of transport layer protocols — and because it further demonstrates that TCP and UDP may not be best suited to all possible situations.
