Abstract

This chapter discusses the desirability of operating converting equipment in order to produce consistent, sustainable, and saleable product quality. Monitoring the web for defects whether in real time or on a roll to roll basis inevitable leads to wasted time and material. The preferred alternative is to monitor and control the conditions of the actual process so that the limits of acceptable quality are not exceeded. The best practice for such a method is to use statistical process control (SPC) methods. This includes providing equipment operators with standard response behaviors (i.e., adjustments to process conditions) know to restore the process to a controlled state. Specific SPC methods for web processes can differ from those used in manufacturing discrete part. Costs of quality to a converting business far exceed the simple waste of time and material lost to off-quality product.
