Abstract

In the second half of the Joseon dynasty, socio-economic development was in process, and the government’s authority was rising as well. After the two wars, people who had been engaged in economic ventures were expanding their activities beyond the legal boundaries established in the early days of the dynasty, and the government was establishing a more comprehensive and detailed web of influence that could monitor and sustain such changes.BR Roads were where such socio-economic developments and the will of the government were coming into contact. Previous studies only examined them as examples of commercial networks being developed in the Joseon period’s second half, or even as examples of Joseon trying to build a new network out of political reasons. How such roadway policy was conceived in the first place, and how it evolved beyond its original perimeters have never been sufficiently examined. So in this article, the roadway spaces are not only analyzed as political outcomes or commercial/economic platforms, but also as an entity that shows us the nature of social changes that occurred in this period, and the government’s stance toward them.BR What will be primarily examined here would be the shortcut roads(間路) that existed in the Joseon dynasty’s second half, in terms of how they were developed and how the government viewed them. By doing so, hopefully we will be able to envision the scope of socio-economic changes, and the government’s control building up together. Interestingly enough, it seems there were close interactions between the government and the society, as we can see such traces from various writings concerning roadway spaces such as the 19th century’s 「Geo’gyeong Jeong’ri-pyo」 and 「Jeong’ri-pyo」. They show us that roadways were developed rather heavily after the wars, and the government was instrumental in creating a managing structure for them.
