Abstract

The misuse/abuse of opioids has increased across the U.S., causing a significant rise in opioid-related overdose deaths. Physicians report having difficulty discerning substance abuse/drug diversion, and research suggests patient characteristics (sex, race, age) may unduly influence providers’ pain management decisions. With the rise in interdisciplinary care, it may be possible to ease physicians’ prescribing decisions and reduce prescribing bias through the assistance of mental health professionals.
