Abstract

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals (OMIA) is a freely available curated knowledgebase that contains information and facilitates research on inherited traits and disorders across more than 300 species. It is used by animal geneticists, breeders and veterinarians worldwide as a definitive source of information on single-locus traits (especially disorders) in all relevant animal species. Increase in curation capacity and funding for software engineering support have resulted in software upgrades and commencement of new initiatives. We provide here an overview of information contained in OMIA, routine curation activities and key user statistics. A review and update of hyperlinks between OMIA and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) is reported. Ongoing initiatives including updates of likely causal variant table information, submission of variant information to the European Variation Archive (EVA), introduction of Mammalian Phenotype Ontology (MPO) categories and planned introduction of breed and phene ontologies into OMIA are briefly discussed.
