Abstract

To delineated the 10 years' trend for the prevalence of suicidal idea and suicide attempt rate among high school students in Taiwan. We conduct this data analysis using the Taiwan Youth Health Survey (TYHS) questionnaire developed by the National Health Service of the Ministry of Health and Welfare from 2007 to 2015. The structured questionnaire included the six major health risk factors of the YRBSS (Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System). We used nationally systematic stratified sampling method. This report focus on psychological distress problems, especially on the loneliness, low mood related insomnia, suicide idea and suicide attempt, as well as body image. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to see the effect of these variables on the suicide idea and suicide attempt among youths. A total of 24706 senior high school students from 2007-2015 were recruited for data analysis. The point prevalence rate of suicide idea rate decreased from 30.7% to 17.5% for male , 43.1% to 18.9% for female, respectively. The point prevalence rate of suicide attempt rate varied from 5.7% to 7.6% for male , and decreased from 10.5% to 6.8% for female, respectively. After adjustment for gender, age at survey, and calendar year at survey, loneliness(3.0X, 1.5X), night student(1.2X, 2.2X), and low mood related poor sleep quality(1.9X, 1.9X) all had higher risk to have suicide idea and suicide attempt. Not satisfied with self body image is only noted to have higher risk to have the suicide idea(1.3X, 95%C.I.: 1.2∼1.4). On the contrary, those with at least one friend are noted to have protective effect (50% ∼72% lowering) to prevent from suicide idea or suicide attempt. The trend of suicide idea and suicide attempt rate across 5 consecutive high school students' survey within 10 years was noted to be in decreasing in Taiwan. The most striking protective factor related with the suicide idea and suicide attempt is youth with friends. The risk factors for suicide attempt are female, not satisfied with self body image, loneliness, low mood related with poor sleep quality and night students. We should pay more attention to those youths who do not have friends and night students on suicide prevention.
