Abstract

This paper examined the role of “Cheong Amun(廳衙門; a sort of temporarily government office) ” set up over the 17th and 18th centuries, and based on this, looked at the changes of central control in the late Joseon Dynasty. This type of government office is first found during the Joseon Dynasty.BR In Chapter 2, I extracted 130 “Cheong Amun” installed in the 17th century. And it was confirmed that they were mostly related to six representative tasks and set up on important national issues. Among them, “Cheong Amun,” which operates as a permanent offices, was mostly military and financial-related organizations. In Chapter 3, I extracted 180 “Cheong Amun” installed in the 18th century. And they also confirmed that they were also focused on six representative tasks and on matters related to royal ceremonies.BR In conclusion, “Cheong Amun” began to be identified as “Cheong Amun” which was installed as a permanent structure after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. And they are listed as official government offices in the period of Youngjo(英祖). They include Seonhyecheong(宣惠廳), Eoyeongcheong(御營廳), Podocheong(捕盜廳), Suseoocheong(守禦廳) and ChongYongcheong(摠戎廳) , all important national bodies during the late Joseon period. In other words, “Cheong Amun” led to a key change in central government during the late Joseon Dynasty.
