Abstract

On-line character recognition systems, usually, extract features like direction, curvature trajectory of the characters, pen-ups, velocity of the pen, etc., from the handwritten characters for recognition. Whereas, if wavelet features of characters are extracted, they represent combination of many of the conventional features and act as a simple novel candidate for character recognition. This paper reports the details of an on-line character recognition system developed by the authors, for the handwritten characters/words of Kannada, a National language of India, which employs the wavelet features of the character contour for recognition. The results obtained are most encouraging.
