Abstract

On March 19, 2003, the United States and Great Britain began an all-out war against Iraq. The objective of the war was to change the political regime in Iraq and to oust its dictator, Saddam Hussein. France was not only opposed to the invasion in Iraq, but it also actively worked to prevent the US and Great Britain from obtaining a resolution from the UN Security Council to authorize the war. This demarche of the French created huge resentment against France in American public opinion and particularly among the political establishment in the United States. French opposition to the war in Iraq has triggered a huge wave of Francophobia in the US media and has resulted in a serious rift in Franco-American relations. This paper aims to analyse the content of political francophobia displayed in selected US newspapers (The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal), as well as in the Weekly Standard magazine, during the Iraq crisis (2002-2004).
