Abstract

In March 2020, telepsychiatry visits increased 154% (CDC MMWR, October 2020). Patients with developmental disabilities require unique and different considerations in the provision of telepsychiatry. Prior to the pandemic, there were few recommendations or guidance on best practices for telepsychiatry usage in patients with developmental disabilities. This talk aims to: 1) highlight the evolution and success of a peer support group that evolved out of the AACAP Autism and Intellectual Disability Committee for psychiatrists working with patients with developmental disabilities; 2) using a case example, share resources that provide guidance for psychiatrists, patients, and caregivers for efficient and effective telepsychiatry appointments; 3) discuss the ways in which training for students, residents, and fellows adapted and changed as telepsychiatry became the primary mode of providing mental health care; and 4) contemplate the long-term effects of the sustained integration of telepsychiatry into clinical practice.
