Abstract

Study Objectives: Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine is a sub-specialty of emergency medicine and involves oversight of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Middle ear barotrauma is the most common complication of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The incidence of reported middle ear barotrauma has varied dramatically between treatment centers from 15%-65%, and previous studies suggested that slower rates of compression might decrease the incidence of middle ear barotrauma. Various rates of compression are used in treatment centers nationwide.
