Abstract

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: PEEK cages have a long clinical history for successful fusion and well-established manufacturing processes. There does however remain a concern with the hydrophobic nature of this semi-crystalline thermoplastic and the nonreactive fibrous tissue layer reported in preclinical and clinical studies. Bulk incorporation of a hydroxyapatite (HA), an osteoconductive material, is a potential solution to address the fibrous tissue interface and encourage direct bone apposition.
