Abstract

The diagnosis of acute pancreatitis in the emergency department (ED) is challenging and increased morbidity and mortality have been seen with age and co-morbidities. Amylase and lipase levels 3 times normal has been established to have sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 95% when diagnosing acute pancreatitis. However, age-related structural and enzymatic changes are commonly seen with advanced age. This study investigates the sensitivity and specificity of serum amylase and lipase in the elderly population.
