Abstract

No botanical preparation produced for the veterinary market has undergone as much research scrutiny as Cannabis sativa, a compound shown to provide salutary benefits for dogs with osteoarthritis and seizure disorder. Critically ill veterinary patients may benefit from one or more of the attributes that hemp-based extracts have demonstrated. At this time, however, veterinarians lack the regulatory consent to sell and/or prescribe non-FDA-approved hemp-based products. Rational and effective implementation of cannabinoid medicine in veterinary health care requires education of practitioners in botanical science, cannabinoid chemistry, and the physiology of the endocannabinoid system, which is not currently taught in professional veterinary medical curricula.
