Abstract

The gut is susceptible to injury after hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HS/R) due to progressive mesenteric hypoperfusion. Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is known to play a vital role in postischemic regeneration in different organs due to its mitogenic, chemoattractant, antiapoptotic and anti-inflammatory functions. In these experiments we utilized HB-EGF knockout (KO) and wild type (WT) mice to determine the role of HB-EGF as a mediator of gut barrier function after hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation (HS/R).
