Abstract

Radiolucencies of the mandible can be caused by periapical granulomas, odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts and malignancies. Intra-oral epidermoid cysts are rare. The literature suggests that only 7% occur in the head and neck area, with only 1.6% occurring in the oral cavity. They represent less than 0.01% of all oral cysts. They usually present as a benign, slow growing, painless entity. The treatment method of choice is usually surgical enucleation under general anaesthetic.
