Abstract

Ectopic parathyroid glands are often the cause of failed parathyroid operations for hyperparathyroidism (HPT). A common site for ectopic parathyroid glands is within the thyroid gland. The radioguided gamma probe has previously been shown to be effective in detecting enlarged parathyroid glands in patients with HPT. Its utility for localizing intrathyroidal parathyroid glands has not been specifically examined.
