Abstract

This chapter focuses on content security in digital cinema. Content security means the prevention of unauthorized use of the motion picture content. This includes the prevention of piracy and the prevention of illegitimate exhibition. The chapter discusses digital cinema standardization efforts, the components that make up a security system for digital cinema, and the goals of a security system for digital cinema and some of the available tools. There are a number of technologies that can be employed to prevent unauthorized use of digital cinema content. These include cryptographic tools to secure the digital content during transportation and to insure its integrity upon receipt, physical security technologies to keep critical secrets, optical techniques to prevent the recording of a movie via camcorder, and forensic tools to track the source of piracy that manages to circumvent all other protection measures. The chapter concludes with a description of the security system proposed in the digital cinema initiative (DCI) digital cinema specification.
