Abstract

An attempt was made to replicate previous findings which had suggested that alcoholic patients could be identified by 16 PF profiles and that these profiles resembled the profiles of neurotic patients more than the profiles of other psychiatric groups. While the general trend of previous results was replicated, the relationships were of such reduced magnitude as to suggest the need for further research regarding the characteristics of the “alcoholic profile” before attempting any practical application of these findings. In an attempt to illuminate the situation further, a “diagnostic” procedure was evolved using 16 PF profiles. It was found that the majority of alcoholic patients were classified as “neurotic” by this system.
