Abstract

Over the last 20 years, umbilical cord blood(UCB) has become an increasingly used source of hematopoeitic stem cells for transplantation. For pediatric patients, UCB is now routinely utilized as a source of stem cells. However, the median age of presentation of most hematologic malignancies is in the 5th and 6th decades of life, a time when other co-morbidities are more likely. Also, patients are frequently referred to transplantation after extensive prior therapy, including prior autologous transplantation.
