Abstract
In this chapter, recent progress in the development and applications of functional coatings based on a variety of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) copolymers for lab-on-a-chip (LOC) systems was introduced and reviewed. The MPC, which is a methacrylate monomer bearing phosphorylcholine group, can prepare many kinds of phospholipid polymers (MPC copolymers) by a conventional radical copolymerization with various functional vinyl monomers. A serial of MPC copolymers were specially designed and synthesized to achieve functional coatings in LOC systems, which are miniaturized and integrated systems for chemistry, physics, materials, biology, bioengineering, medicine, pharmacy, and environmental sciences. The surface modification with these MPC copolymers exhibited capabilities to not only resolve common problems widely occurred in LOC systems but also provide various chip functions for different purposes. Therefore the development of the MPC copolymers is important to not only expand the applications of the MPC copolymers in LOC science but also exploit possibilities of LOC systems.
