Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 16-week band exercise program and acupuncture treatment on the body composition and mobility of the knee in elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the knee in China. In this study, 90 elderly Chinese patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were equally divided into three groups, one group receiving a combination of elastic band exercise and acupuncture treatment, another group receiving band exercise treatment, and the last group receiving acupuncture. Treatments were applied for 16 weeks each. As a result, the combined treatment and the band exercise treatment were effective for changing body composition, respectively, but the acupuncture treatment was not effective. Combined treatment improved balance ability, knee range of motion, and isokinetic muscle strength in the lower extremities. Summarizing the above results, it was confirmed that the combined treatment of band exercise and acupuncture was the most effective for improving body composition, balance ability, knee range of motion, and isokinetic muscle strength of lower extremities in elderly Chinese patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
