Abstract

Objectives The present study was designed to evaluate the association of some reproductive hormones with pregnancy induced hypertension in Nigerian pregnant women. Methods The study was conducted at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria and comprised of normotensive and hypertensive pregnant women as well as normotensive and hypertensive non pregnant women who were non users of contraceptives and were all receiving prenatal care at this Hospital in 2013. The women were in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy and 3–6 days postpartum. Progesterone, estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin and luteinizing hormone (LH) were assessed for all participants using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Results There was a significant increase ( P P Conclusions The changes observed in the plasma levels of these hormones are indications of their association with pregnancy induced hypertension and these might be related with the pathogenesis of pregnancy induced hypertension in Nigerian women.
