Abstract
151 Eu-Mossbauer and magnetic susceptibility measurements on EuIr 2 Si 2 suggest that this material is an intermediate valent system. Variation of average valence V is very much pronounced compared to EuCu 2 Si 2 ; V = 2.3 and 2.8 at 300K and 4.2K respectively. Excitation energy, E ex = ( E 2+ g − E 3+ g ) and the spin fluctuation temperature, T sf , are strongly temperature dependent.
