Abstract

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that regulates the circadian rhythm, and in the United Kingdom is licensed for treating insomnia in patients aged over 55 years. However, research shows melatonin has many other advantages such as anti-oxidant effects and bone protection. In-vitro and animal studies on medication- related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) have demonstrated increased bone formation and protective effects against MRONJ with melatonin. We appraised the evidence on melatonin’s effects on bone regeneration and protection to evaluate the potential use of this medication for OMFS patients with MRONJ.
