Abstract

Evidence suggests that patient characteristics such as sex, race, and age influence the pain management decisions of healthcare providers. Although this signifies that patient demographics may be important determinants of healthcare decisions, pain-related care may also be impacted by the personal characteristics of the healthcare provider. For instance, in a previous investigation we found that healthcare profession type significantly influenced pain assessment and treatment decisions. However, the extent to which other healthcare provider characteristics affect pain management decisions is relatively unclear, underscoring the need for further research in this area.
