Abstract
This chapter outlines patent analysis techniques that have the potential to forecast technological advances that will drive whole industries. The authors provide an overview of the most relevant strategies and techniques in analyzing patent data, followed by two case studies in the food retailing and distribution sector that illustrate how patent analysis techniques can be applied. As a result this study maps out future technological trends in the food retailing sector. We argue that patent analysis techniques are very useful for practitioners and researchers alike as they allow identifying, understanding, and reacting to technological advances in the food sector.
