Abstract

Quantum dots (QDs) are materials in which quantum confinement effects are evidenced. These QDs represent a broad group of small semiconducting nanoparticles (less than 10nm) and are widely studied due to unique combination of optical and electronic properties. Novel performance characteristics and precise tunability make QDs promising nanomaterials in numerous applications. Furthermore, QDs are less expensive and eco-friendly because of their nontoxicity and have attracted interest from academics and industries. This chapter presents detailed outlook of current and probable chemical applications of QDs in chemical detection/sensing, bio-sensing and residue detection with synthesis techniques. Applications of QDs in liquid-phase separation (capillary electrophoresis) techniques along with chemical applications of carbon QDs and graphene QDs are discussed followed by some discussion on challenges and future prospects.
