Abstract
Transformers are used in an auxiliary circuit and are linked to a power circuit to indicate, measure, and control its voltages and currents. There are two types of transformers: voltage transformers (VTs) and current transformers (CTs). Vts are further classified into instrument voltage transformers (conventional two-winding, electromagnetic voltage transformers, residual voltage transformers, and capacitor voltage transformers) and control transformers. CTs are also further classified into instrument current transformers (measuring current transformers, protection current transformers and special-purpose current transformers), interposing current transformers, summation current transformers, and core balance current transformers. The basic requirements, design parameters of transformers and their selection and applications are provided in this chapter along with the precautions that should be observed while installing VTs and CTs. They find application in switchgear or a controlgear assembly and a switchyard.
