Abstract

This paper describes how there have been a number of very serious tunnel fires in recent times. A few tunnel fire incidents will be briefly reviewed in this paper with respect to human behavior in fire. It is clear from available reports on tunnel fires that in some cases insufficient consideration may have been given in the design of the tunnel to the life safety potential of tunnel users in a fire emergency. It is also apparent that some of the behaviors of people threatened by fire in tunnels were foreseeable. With the aid of hindsight it is possible to reflect on particular events and draw conclusions that should ensure that such events do not happen again.
