Abstract

The changes in the proton-nitrogen double resonance 14N NQR spectra on ultraviolet irradiation and on temperature show that photochromism and thermochromism in solid salicylidene-2-chloroaniline and N-5′-chlorosalicylideneaniline are accompanied by intramolecular proton transfer and an enol-keto transformation brought about by the transition of a proton from a lower energy tautomeric state (enol) to a higher energy minimum (the keto tautomeric state).
