Abstract

Abstract 14 N NQR frequencies have been measured at two temperatures in solid 4,4′-azoxyanisole (PAA) and 4,4′-bis(heptyloxy)azoxybenzene (HpAB) by the nuclear quadrupole double resonance techniques based on multiple frequency sweeps and two-frequency irradiation. Two sets of three 14 N NQR lines have been determined in both compounds with a resolution of 5–10 kHz, which is much higher than the resolution of the field-cycling relaxometry used in a previous study [J. Seliger, R. Osredkar, M. Mali, R. Blinc, J. Chem. Phys. 65 (1976) 2887]. The two sets of NQR frequencies have been unambiguously assigned to two nitrogen positions, –N and –N(O) , in both substances. All molecules within the unit cell are crystallographically equivalent in PAA as well as in HpAB. The present results are related to the results of the fast-field-cycling relaxometry and nuclear quadrupole double resonance in the liquid crystal phases of PAA and HpAB.
