Abstract

14N ENDOR investigations of the (CH 3) 3N +ĊHCOO − radical in a γ-irradiated betaine arsenate single crystal were performed at room temperature. The investigations reveal the full tensors of the 14N hyperfine and electric quadrupole coupling. The 14N hyperfine interaction tensor fits well to the model of the (CH 3) 3N +ĊHCOO − radical structure. The quadrupole tensor reflects the symmetry of the nitrogen site in the betaine molecule of the betaine arsenate. The Townes-Dailey approach was used to obtain the electronic population in the sp 3 nitrogen orbitals from the 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling.
