Abstract

Youth involved in the juvenile justice system experience a disproportionate burden of trauma and stress. Few programs exist that focus on enhancing resiliency in this population. We are implementing a strengths-based, anti-oppression yoga and mindfulness program at a juvenile detention center with the goal of helping incarcerated youth build self-regulatory skills and self-efficacy to use mindfulness strategies. The purpose of the present study is to demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability, as well as preliminary effectiveness, of implementing a yoga and mindfulness program in a juvenile justice setting.
